Robert A. Schwartz is a physician and academic. For the past three decades he has been the Professor and Head of Dermatology at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Professor Schwartz served on the Rutgers University Board of Trustees and is the Chairman of the university-wide Academic Standards, Regulations and Admissions Committee. Professor Schwartz is the Editor-in-Chief of Dermatologic Therapy, a peer-reviewed medical journal.
Professor Schwartz is the author or coauthor of over 1000 scholarly publications, including five books. Professor Schwartz is an honorary member of over 20 national societies in his field. He has received the titles of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, and Honorary Professor. Professor Schwartz is a pioneer in the realm of HIV research, dermatologic oncology, and paraneoplastic syndromes. He led teams that first described AIDS-associated Kaposi sarcoma and florid cutaneous papillomatosis (Schwartz-Burgess syndrome). Professor Schwartz developed the first effective treatment for Kaposi sarcoma, together with Professor Edmund Klein, as well as original descriptions of Kaposi sarcoma subtypes.
Professor Schwartz is a Member of the U.S. Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS. He is an Oversees Regional Adviser for the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Professor Schwartz has been active at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 2004, participating in the Health Services Organization and Delivery Study Section. Professor Schwartz is a Member of the Board of Directors of the International Society of Dermatology and the Advisory Board of the International Society of Dermatology.
Professor Schwartz graduated with a degree in political science from the University of California, Berkeley. There he also earned a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, and subsequently completed medical school (MD) at the New York Medical College. Professor Schwartz furthered his training at the University of Cincinnati as well as at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute of the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Professor Schwartz is board-certified in dermatology as well as in diagnostic and laboratory immunology.
